As part of ODER~SO, the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) and its research partners are working on scientific issues relating to the mass development of the brackish water alga Prymnesium parvum in the Oder, its causes and the reaction and resilience of the river ecosystem. To this end, they collect and analyse a wide range of water chemistry, geographical and ecological data on the Oder, its tributaries and floodplains on German territory.
However, it is in the authorities' responsibility to monitor the water status of the Oder, including the monitoring of algae development, and to implement measures to prevent future mass blooms.
