Oder River disaster: What is known about the alga Prymnesium parvum?

In July and August 2022, a man-made environmental disaster occurred in the Oder River: a mass die-off of fish, mussels and snails that started in the Polish section of the Oder and then continued downstream until it reached the border Oder. Researchers estimate that up to 1,000 tonnes of fish were lost.

In the special investigation programme ODER~SO, scientists are researching the course of the environmental disaster in the Oder in the summer of 2022, the current state of the river as well as precautionary measures and resilience factors for the protection of the ecosystem.

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) is funding ODER~SO with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). In addition to the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), other scientific institutions involved in the project are the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH (UFZ) Magdeburg, the Institute of Inland Fisheries Potsdam-Sacrow (IfB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).
